Todd Gray invited several hundred people who had memories of Exeter during the war to write of their experiences. The result is as close to a first hand account of the evacuees, the blackout, the blitz, and the Americans in Exeter as can be obtained. A vivid picture of surviving, during a harrowing time, emerges with humour, pathos and 'making do.'Published by the Mint Press.

The West Quarter has not always been a trendy place to live. This little book reprints a series of reports from an anonymous writer, that were published in 1854, in a local newspaper. An often affectionate and sympathetic account of the people of the West Quarter and Exe Island, designed to show the appalling conditions at a time when the public's awareness of poverty in the underclass had been awakened by the writings of Charles Dickens. Life in the workhouse and among the verminous tenements is recounted with a straight forward honesty that is unusual for the time. Published by the Mint Press.
