Speedway in the South West - Tony Lethbridge New

Speedway has had a chequered history in the South-West since it was first launched at Exeter's County Ground in 1929. During that time, tracks at Plymouth and Weymouth have opened, flourished and then sadly disappeared, while Exeter and Poole have maintained a virtually continuous presence. The Pirates in particular have consistently been one of Britain's best-supported teams, while also enjoying considerable on-track success. In the South-West, St Austell and Plymouth always struggled to attract the top riders, and yet, many international stars, among them World Champions Ivan Mauger, Gary Havelock, Mark Loram and Tony Rickardsson have ridden for West Country clubs. Local talent flourished, with Ringwood and Weymouth witnessing the first wobbly laps of many future stars. Blackshirts in Devon - Todd Gray

An innovative study which opens up a surprising aspect of the history of Devon. Sir Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts arrived in Devon at Plymouth in the summer of 1933 and quickly became a force in the city. Soon branches of the British Union of Fascists were quickly established all over Devon.
