Eastgate Arcade

Postby chris stacey » Fri Oct 23, 2009 8:32 pm

Has anyone got photos of my Dads shops in Eastgate Arcade in about 1938/39. This was John Stacey Antiques at No 5 and 21. Quite happy to pay for these photos.

According to the street directories No 5 The Arcade was on the left going from the High St. entrance to Southernhay. In 1939 Nos 1 & 2 were Towill & Co, goldsmiths & silversmiths; Nos 3 & 4 were Melhuish's, art furnishers and then your father's, E. Stacey, antiques and works of art.
I have an undated photo from the early part of the 20th century, possibly 1910 or so, but you cannot make out any name of the shop alongside Melhuishs - and in fact it could be part of Melhuishs, not your father's. I cannot recall seeing any "modern" photo of the Arcade , they are usually in the early years of the 20th century. I will email this photo to David Cornforth and he can pass it on for what it is worth. The Arcade, as I am sure you know, was lost in the blitz of 1942.

Hi Chris
Here is the photo of the Arcade that Dick Passmore wanted me to post for you. It is about 30 years earlier than your required date. Dick wrote "No 5 could be on the extreme right, or of course it could be the second half of Melhuish's at Nos 3 & 4."

Chris.
A correction to my posting. David Cornforth and I have been looking at the photograph more closely, and it is taken from the High Street end. The large stained glass window you can see in the distance was the Southernhay end. The High Street end had an illuminated clock over the entrance. When you look at Besley's directories, there seems to be little doubt that the numbering started not on the left going down, as one would imagine, but on the right. So we are looking at No 1 on the right, going down to 13, and then the far end on the left is 14, coming back to the left corner of the photo which is No23. It would therefore appear that your father's shop was not on the extreme right of the photo, as I said, but the far side of the Melhuish's sign, roughly where the lady with a multi-buttoned jacket is standing. His shop may even be the one with the facade that juts out slightly. Fascinating old business, isn't it ?!!

Hi Dick,
Yes this is facinating, the most interesting thing here is that E. Stacey was my grandmother. I knew that my Dad had 2 shops, but I did not realise that one was my grandmothers.

Thankyou all once again. If you do come across a picture of either shops, I would really appreciate this.

Yours Chris
